Catholics are Christians. At some point in history, the Primitive Church evolved in Europe into Roman Catholicism. Roman Catholicism claims that the first pope was Peter, one of the disciples of Jesus. Then Christians got divided between Roman Catholics (Western rite Christians) and Orthodox Catholics (Eastern rite Christians) in 1054 (for more, see the Great Schism). The Protestant Reformation is a much more recent phenomenon (16th century) and evolved out of the criticism of and opposition to Roman Catholicism and the status of the pope and the clergy in 16th-century Europe. Many former Catholics criticized and opposed the incredible wealth of the Catholic churches and their leaders, and their respective power and influence on European nations’ politics. They also criticized the adoration of the Virgin Mary, the statues and gold decorations, the confession to a priest, the selling of “indulgences” by the Catholic Church, and the corruption and immoral conduct of some of the religious leaders in 16th-century Europe, to name just a few of the grievances. I would like to insist on the fact that corruption, the influence and pursuit of political power prior to the Protestant Reformation were not part of the Catholic faith, of course (for those who might misunderstand), but were tools used by religious leaders — at that time — to achieve their un-religious, below-standard, unethical goals. Imagine you had to pay for an indulgence a lot of money to a simple human being, a clergyman, in order to receive forgiveness from God. Many believers were poor and could not afford to pay for forgiveness. Indulgences should be free, claimed Protestant dissidents. No wonder the people was unhappy and wanted to “get rid of” the go-between between Man and God. This is only one example of grievances. In conclusion, it’s the conduct of the Catholic clergy in the 15th-16th centuries that precipitated the advent of Protestantism in the 16th century, and not the basic articles of faith of Catholicism. A Catholic is a Christian first and foremost. All Catholics are Christians. Not all Christians are Catholics. That is faith belief. Catholic, Episcopal, Baptist, Lutheran, etc. are denominations of believers with shared expressions of their faith beliefs. The term "catholic" with a lower case "c" means universal.
